Gene's Journal, Entry 8

During the winter at Devon, we had to shovel the snow of the rairoad so the trains can pass. When i was going back to my dorm that day, i remember i was shocked to find Finny there. Finny was digusted it seemed by the clothes i wore that day, i only wore them because i had to work on the railroads." Where did you get those clothes!" "I've been working, that's all. These are just work clothes." Brinker noticed that Finny was back too and was almost as suprised as me. Then he said that my plan didn't work after all, meaning the plan to get the dorm all to myself.

Gene's Journal, Entry 7

When i got back into Devon, i had to take a shower to wash off the salt from the Naguamsett River, even though stepping into Devon was refreshing as it is. I was stopped by Brinker after the shower too. He tried to talk to me like i knew Finny wasn't going to be here so i can get the dorm all to my self. " I'll bet you knew all the time Fonny wouldn't be back this fall. That's why you picked himfor a roomate, right?" He kept talking to me like he knew what i did. I told him that i felt like a smoke and that we should go down to the Butt Room. Brinker was trying to be like a Judge to get me to confess to purposely injuring Finny. I know that i jounced the limb on purpose, but how was i supposed to know he would've shattered his leg. Brinker kept saying how i did this just to get a room all to my self and how Finny is fighting life and death while being cared by his old mother. " Finny's hanging between life and death at home, in the arms of his grief stricken old mother."

Gene's Journal, Entry 6

I was doing some jobs for a person named Quackenbush i think, the first thing he wanted me to do was get towels for something. I found out that he rowed on the lightweight crew for two years. We started to argue for some reason. I ended up punching him hard in the face and then he had his arm around my neck, we both fell into the river. " I hit him hard across the face." When i was walking, Mr. Ludsbury met up with me to ask my something but i think i told him not now because i "fell" into the river. He pointed out that i have fallen into the river plenty of times and that there was gaming going on in the dormitories. Then he told me that there was a long distance call waiting for me and told me to go call the number back if i wanted too. The number was from my hometown, when i called it back, i heard Finny's voice on the other line.

Gene's Journal, Entry 5

I don't think any of us were allowed near the infirmary, and then i remember that a cold hard fact came out that he shattered his leg. "Eventually a fact emerged; it was one of his legs, which had been 'shattered.' I had a conversation with the doctor who was helping Finny, if i remember, he said that he could walk again, but he wouldn't be able to play any more sports. I cried that day too. I was told the he wanted to see me first out of anyone else. He cracked a joke too i think, which enlightened me a little. We talked and talked, asking what happened and how. I told him that i purposely jounced the limb. I remember the anger he had, he wasn't angry at the fact that i did it, but he was so convinced that I didn't do it. He kept telling me to shut up and stop talking because he didn't believe that i did it. After a little bit of argueing, he wan't me to leave the room. Before i left, i think i asked him how long it will be until he can come back to Devon, he said around Thanksgiving.

Gene's Journal, Entry 4

When i woke up from sleeping, i remember that it wasn't exactly beautiful, but it was kind of gray. "It began not as the gorgeous fanfare over the ocean i had expected, but as a strange gray thing, like sunshine seen through burlap." After a while, the color began to appear. If i can remember, i had a test that same day too, it was the first test i ever failed. "I flunked it; I knew I was going to as soon as i looked at the test problems. It was the first test i had ever flunked." Then i remember the conversation that me and Finny had about "trying to hard". I was aiming to be valedictorian, anf Finny called me out on it but i don't think i cared that much, i wanted both of us to be on top. I remember i became a great student after that talk with Finny, i don't know why. I was always a good student but, not this good. Finny wasn't the best student long ago, he got grades that were almost failing, and i was shooting to the top of the class, i remember that Finny actually started to study more that summer too. We went to the tree again, Finny wanted both of us to jump, a "double jump" if i recall. I remember that when he was going to jump, i kind of jumped on the branch, it made him lose his balance and he hit the ground hard, he shattered his leg.

Gene's Journal, Entry 3

In the journal i found, i guess i was mad in a way for Finny saving my life, he could have killed me too because i wouldn't have been on that branch if it wasn't for him. "Yes, he had practically saved my life. He had also practically lost it for me. I wouldn't have been on that damn limb except for him. I wouldn't have turned around, and so lost my balance, if he hadn't been there." Our society was doing great from the start if i remember correctly. I remember that Finny also invented a game to play when we had nothing do to. It was called blitzkrieg ball but then Finny just said to call it blitzball. I don't remember how to play it of coarse but it was pretty fun if i recall. I think that basics of the game was to simply bring down the guy who had the ball. Finny was always making up new rules as he went on so that why i can't remember exactly. I remember that Leper was sort of playing but didn't want the ball so Finny made another rule saying that you can refuse the ball if you don't want it.

Gene's Journal, Entry 2

I found a journal i wrote in when i attended this school, this should bring back a lot of memories, good and bad. We liked to go swimming in the river sometimes too but it cost us missing dinner, about nine times. Finny was always goofing off, i remember one time when he grabbed a tablecloth to use as his "emblem", and it was pink too. I told him he looked like a fairy too. We went to the tree later which i was afraid to jump out of but Finny was their to push me to do it. We decided to start a society together. it was called The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. Then i went to jump and as i was about to, i turned around to say something to Finny and i lost my balance, Finny saved my life that day because his and shot out and grabbed me. After that, i got i good start and leaped of the branch far into the water, Finny was right behind me and also got a good jump. " Finny also made a good jump, and the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session was officially established."
